We live in an ever-progressive technological age in which the availability of information is overabundant. This technology and information can be used to convey many messages. In this series, newsprint, representing information, is presented in a variety of ways, and Ms. Kim asks three questions...
Can you find the right message?
Can you choose the right message?
Can you use the right message?
Fire and Water
Ms. Kim began the second work in The Message series in 2013. The newsprint in this piece is dyed with red and blue Korean pigment. Unlike the paper that is folded closed in Coffee, the hand-folded newsprint here cannot be closed as information has become even more abundant and cannot be contained. Aside from the three thematic questions about messages being conveyed in society, Ms. Kim delves deeper. As a starting point, she uses the basic connotations of red/blue and fire/water to show one item of information being used to deliver opposing messages. Furthermore, her design of the two art pieces allows multiple presentations in either side-by-side or in end-to-end fashion.
