We live in an ever-progressive technological age in which information availability is overabundant. Technology and information are used to convey many messages. In this series, newsprint, representing information, is presented in various ways, and Ms. Kim asks three questions...
Can you find the right message?
Can you choose the right message?
Can you use the right message?
Coffee
Ms. Kim began her first work in The Message series in 2011 as she
witnessed the ever-increasing popularity of the iPhone and other hand-held electronic devices. She dyed newsprint in coffee to prompt memories
of morning newspaper and coffee rituals. Over many months, she hand-folded the paper in a way that was reminiscent of her Korean childhood
when youngsters would write messages to each other and fold the paper
as depicted in Coffee for delivery. Upon receipt, the beneficiary would
eagerly open this specially folded gift with anticipation, excitement, and
gratitude. Aside from the three main questions above in this series, Ms.
Kim also asks...
1. How has technology affected personal relationships?
2. Is this readily available and over-abundant information as precious
as it used to be?
3. What is it like to touch and turn the pages of a newspaper?
