We live in a rapidly moving society in which eight-second attention spans, immediate gratification, and opportunistic behavior are becoming more common. Interpersonal relationships are easily built and broken. People are judged and valued by surface appearances. Minimal effort is made to peer beyond the surface in knowing a fellow human being.
In this series of Truth in Boxes, Ms. Kim invites us to consider the many boxes seen in everyday life. They exist in different sizes, strengths, and semblances. When a delivery box arrives in this internet-order era, excitement occurs as we see the label or the innovative design on the box surface in anticipation of its contents. However, this is fleeting as the box is opened and cast aside easily.
Similarly, people exist in different sizes, strengths, and semblances.
Broken Boxes
In this work, Ms. Kim shows us what humanity could look like if we look beyond the superficial formed box. She brings together pieces of boxes in order to consider the substance of a fellow human being. It is painted in deep yellow or blue to convey Ms. Kim’s hope and joy of seeing the true value of another. Furthermore, the pieces are arranged tightly to add density and strength to the work.
Additionally, in this day there are many broken lives. This work declares that although brokenness is not a prerequisite to hope, there is hope in brokenness.
